WHAT IS DIVINATION?

Shannon Walbran
You have angel cards, you've started to pull them. You have questions about your life and you want to know what to do. And you're wondering how to use the cards.

Christine
Yep.

Shannon Walbran
How's it going so far? What have you tried and what has worked?

Christine
I pull when I'm feeling a bit down, I pull if I feel like my day is not going to be too great. If I'm a bit nervous about the day ahead, I pull. They're all very positive, which worries me because I feel like it might be a false sense of security. But they're all positive. I don't know if -- I'm reading them very literally. And I don't know if there's something I need to be looking for. Or if it's not all that as positive as it seems?

But they have been very helpful and pretty accurate. Even if I don't know why I'm feeling stressed, something will come up and it'll resonate. Okay. Yes, that is actually -- it's touching something that I didn't realize I was actually quite anxious about. So it is guiding and it is speaking to, obviously things I'm not aware of.

Shannon Walbran
Right, yeah. Yeah. What do you think this process is? What do you think the process of pulling a card? Sometimes it's called divination, that's the technical word for it. The technical word for pulling cards and getting messages is cartomancy. That implies fortune telling, which is not really what we do. Nothing in the future is written in stone. You can't say, "This is gonna happen or this will happen this way." But what what we're looking for is more about, as you're saying: feedback, guidance and insight. What do you think the process of pulling cards is about? What do you think it's for?

Christine
That's a very personal question. For me, it's sometimes I feel like I have a lot of responsibility. I'm a single mom. And so for me it gives me a sense of hope and a sense of not being alone. That there is a bigger picture and I do believe energy attracts energy, and that hopeful energy that I get from reading cards because as I said, it's normally a positive reading, inspires me and attracts, I think, more positivity. Sorry, I don't if I'm answering your question, Shannon, can you just ask me again?

Shannon Walbran
You are! You totally are, because where I was going to go with this is -- because what I'm hearing is that you feel support, like in real life, like me too, I'm also a single mom. In real life. I often feel, "Oh my gosh, I'm on my own. I have to make all these big decisions and -- whoa, the world's going to hell in a handbasket and what's my part? What am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to be small right now? Am I supposed to be big? Am I supposed to be working, am I supposed to be working on this or working on that?"

What I'm hearing you saying is that you get support. You feel loved, guided, you feel known. Because only you know you, right? I know me. But the cards somehow are giving you messages that are like, "Actually We really know what's going on."

Christine
Exactly. And brings to light things I wasn't aware I was feeling. I think for me, that's a big thing. I actually heard an interesting Carl Jung quote yesterday, which said, "Until the subconscious is conscious, we allow it to lead us and call it Fate." I think it was on your website, too, if I'm not mistaken.

Shannon Walbran
I love him. I've quoted him a bunch. There's also one by St. Thomas, that is, "What is inside, if it's stuck inside, it's not good for you. But what's inside, if it comes out, then it can become your medicine."

Christine
Right. It taps into that stuff, which I'm not necessarily aware of, and brings in emotion that I wasn't aware I had and hopefully makes me -- I don't like to use the word "control," but more aware.

Shannon Walbran
The more aware we are, the better we have leverage, the better we can make moves. This doesn't necessarily have to mean "in control." If you're in a canoe, right? And you're going down a rapid river, it's not as if you're in control. But if you can see the rocks up ahead, you can steer. That doesn't mean we're controlling Nature, or we're controlling the river. It means we're in the river. And we're even more alert, not hypervigilant alert, but, "Oh, look rocks! Oh, look, a tree! Oh, look, the water's rising!" We need to know that kind of thing.

Christine
It allows me that sort of middle space, if that makes sense.

Shannon Walbran
Oh, well, definitely. I mean, from a Buddhist perspective, to look at equanimity, to look at that "working with what is," you know, admitting, admiring, and seizing that moment of now, the presentness and finding equanimity, which is to see the ups and the downs and getting into balance around that. Gosh, if the cards are helping you do that, then they are a really good tool for you.

Christine
Yeah, I think so. And it just frees me up. Allows me to breathe and to feel positive and and to know I'm okay. And it's okay, just to be here. Yeah.

Shannon Walbran
Yeah, that's cool.
